Back to the Grind!

Well today was the first day at work. I was heartbroken to leave my little one but that's a story for another (less emotional) day. Returning to work was strange. Like I'd never left but I couldn't remember certain little things.

One thing I had definately forgotten about (at least a little) was old people - as I affectionately refer to the elderly. Here is conversation from today....

H: Good morning Mr. S. How can I help you today?
Mr. S: I need new hearing aids.
H: Ok, where are you current hearing aids?
Mr. S: They didn't work. This one was too tight (pointing to the right ear) and this one broke (pointing to the left). I threw them in the garbage.

Turns out he only threw out the right aid. He still has the left which I can repair but wow! That's a $2000 hearing aid you threw out (funded by a 3rd party) and you're not eligible for another 2 years and you can't afford new aids. What were you thinking????

I then told this story to my colleague who said "Oh, yes, I meant to tell you, Mr. F was in last week. You remember him right? 95 year old, blind and severely hearing impaired patient? He accidentally threw out his aids last week." Old people.

Spring Chicken

I had an appointment at the doctor's today and got the talk about calcium and osteoporosis and suddenly I felt old.

When I look at my baby (my first baby) I feel like I'm 23. When I see the moms in the church nursery who are 23 I realize that I am not. They probably haven't had the talk.

In the picture above, taken on my wedding day 4 years ago, you can see my eyes, relatively free from wrinkles at the age of 31, three years before the arrival of my little bean. There are more lines and wrinkles there now. Sleepless nights holding her, feeding her and worrying about her have left their mark. Mostly the thought of aging doesn't trouble me, except when I think about how I want to be around to see as much of her life as possible.

So I'll be taking my calcium and hopefully preventing a hip fracture in the not-as-distant-as-I-would-like future.
